I just recently I had a chance to sit in on a lecture about dry skin, peptides and more at a beauty show held on the east coast. There was a lecture by Michael Pugliese of Circadia that really seemed to catch my attention. I like these lectures because what may seem like common knowledge to me makes perfect tuesday topic fodder for my blog. As I sat down to investigate other studies about the link between increased skin cancer risks and dry skin I ran across this awesome entry from the International Dermal Institute. CLICK THIS LINK to check out the anatomy of a wrinkle, skin discoloration, collagen breakdown and more.
There wasn't much on the topic of dry skin and skin cancer in my research. Perhaps because it's just common sense? The moral of the story is dry skin is compromised skin that is not able to function properly. This makes us more prone to breakouts and other skin issues as well because dry skin is unable to protect itself. We also lose internal moisture (hyaluronic acid) as we age. According to Pugliese we notice this dryness more in the winter because there is a drastic difference in the humidity in the air in the winter versus the summer...sometimes as much as 80% unless you already live in dry climates like my Vegas and Saudi clients do.
Moral of the story- stay hydrated, use your barrier creams outside to protect against weather dryness and make sure to use products that hydrate your skin like Shea Butter. I sound like a broken record, but oils only seal the moisture in!!! Getting sunburns in the past already increases the risk for skin cancer, but don't let dry skin nail the coffin shut!!!
