You're probably thinking what does a car have to do with dry skin and wrinkles? We'll get there, but first
I'm going to begin with a spotlight on beauty consumer advocate Paula Begoun and what she has to say about dry skin and wrinkles. Paula is a veteran of the beauty industry that has been breaking down and educating consumers on beauty so that we can make more informed choices and get past the smoke and mirrors of advertising.
I love the article she did on dry skin and wrinkles. You should check out her article HERE. She talks about how the number one reason for wrinkled skin is sun damage, not lack of moisture. A test to show how the sun effects how you age is to take the armpit and compare the quality of your armpit skin to your face. We used to measure our client's sun damage in the arm pit with a machine called the Beau Visage as armpits are obviously one of those areas that rarely get any sun.
Paula also brings up a good point that dry skin does not mean wrinkled skin like the industry would make us want to believe. If that were the case younger children with dry skin conditions like eczema would look old.
I agree with most of what Paula says, but there's usually a part that's missing or not quite the entire story. For instance Collagen binds with water. As we age and lose collagen, we also lose the water and hyaluronic acid (among MANY other things). Water or products that make our skin look like it has moisture can make the skin appear to function better. The problem is most skincare products are not effective at delivering moisture, especially to the deeper layers of skin that really require moisture.
What's worse is many of the products that are out there just coat or plug up the skin with petrol (gasoline-based) chemicals. In other words you are putting a layer of plastic on your face. If you ever had trouble with your skin breathing, sweating or breakouts from moisturizer you can better your pretty little face that might have something to do with that.
Speaking of gasoline, even the auto industry is plugging into the wrinkle/anti-aging scene. According to the UK Daily Mail Honda is coming out with a car that prevents wrinkles caused by sun damage. They're calling it the anti-wrinkle car. The colors are baby pink, brown and white to better compliment women's makeup. LOL!! You can read more about it HERE!
At the end of the day I always say aging or rather anti-aging begins with what we eat. People are so obsessed with sunscreen when in fact we she be worried about staying away from processed foods and making sure we consume foods that protect the cells- foods high in antioxidants and essential fatty acids like astaxanthin and foods with rich, vibrant colors. We should also eat collagen-producing foods high in glycine. 30% of our collagen is produced by glycine, a vital amino acid, which is generally found in meat. That's why vegetarians who used to be carnivores have such thin skin and generally age faster. You can read more about those studies HERE. Finally when customers of mine take a product like Wholemega by New Chapter (cold-pressed omega 3, 5, 6,7,9) their skin magically gets creamier and dewy! I put that product up against any $400+ cream on the market!
Remember in winter there is exponentially less humidity in the air robbing the skin of vital moisture. Products that contain shea or putting on coconut oil right out of the shower on damp skin can help to relieve dry skin and surface wrinkles!
My hats off to Paula Begoun once again for being in the beauty trenches and helping to educate the consumer.
