SKINCARE MYTHS

by Mary Schook

A lot of what I believe and practice with my clients (who get RESULTS if they are patient and follow the rules) is not very popular or even discussed amongst doctors, derms or even beauty companies UNTIL NOW.

This past weekend while working on the computer I couldn't help but to notice a yahoo feature ad with Carrie Underwood saying it was a myth that hot water opens the pores. I couldn't have been more thrilled to see that P&G, who owns Olay (formerly Oil of Olay), was educating the public about things that I have been preaching, posting and tweeting about for MANY years now. I never usually pay attention or EVER click through ads online, but Carrie Underwood saying hot water doesn't do anything instantly drew me in like a moth to a flame (I apologize for the generic idiom)!

The reason I was so happy to see this is because a few weeks back I posted about steam and heat being bad for the skin because it breaks down the collagen. I can't tell you how much flack I got over that post. Both Facialists and aspiring facialists were beating me up. People were unsubscribing on my twitter, facebook, and private mail feeds. Who knew talking about heat vs cold therapy could be so offensive??? Someone who obviously knows nothing about me dared to comment 'so much advice online is poorly researched - works well for the blogger but not necessarily for general population. It also is often incomplete, hard to follow, or otherwise unhelpful.'

Although I am licensed in skincare (and one of the leading sources in stem cell media in beauty), little does this poor girl know I don't claim to be anything but someone who uses common sense.

Back to Olay they just posted a new source tool for skincare. IF YOU CLICK HERE you will be able to access things that I have been preaching about like:
-Hot water does NOT open pores.
-Cold water does NOT close them.
-Soap does not clean the skin. It actually leaves behind a residue and compromises the pH of the skin causing acne.
-UV rays DO come from your computer.

In case you were wondering Olay has no idea who I am. An ad agency hired me as a makeup artist for a very well paid commercial for Olay some years back and got to experience first hand how effective their microderm and peel kit was on the model. I was really blown away and have been recommending it to hundreds of people ever since. If someone else made something better I would talk about that instead, but until then I stand by this mass market product.

At the end of the day who knew I would be vindicated for my skin care beliefs by a drugstore brand!

Thanks as always for reading and believing!
