COFFEE FATIGUE AND AGING

by mary schook
There's a lot of exhaustion and fatigue going on lately especially in New York City. We're a bit beat up from Hurricane Sandy and the Noreaster on top of a nail-biting election. It's not necessarily from a lack of sleep as it is adrenal fatigue. We're over caffeinated and dehydrated.

Many of us are trained to wake up and drink coffee. This action can set us up for a roller coaster of fatigue because our energy is set so high (especially if you add sugar to your coffee) that crashing happens earlier in the day. That crash can lead to consuming more caffeine or supplementing the lack of energy with sugar, which is sure to age you faster!

According to Dr. OZ another reason we get fatigued is a lack of iron and dehydration. 'The tannins found in tea and coffee interfere with iron absorption, so try to avoid drinking these beverages for a few hours before a meal that's high in iron, especially when you're trying to build up your body's stores.'

There are a few alternative ways to get energy. Runa's Guayusa tea actually gives the body a safer dose of caffeine. You get almost the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee without the tannins or the crash. East Indians also suggest drinking hot water with lemon morning and night for energy instead of the coffee. It is very cleansing and antibacterial for the body. More on that another time. Some of my clients drink green juices for energy in the morning. I call it the supermodel super tonic because there isn't a supermodel I know that doesn't juice it for breakfast!

By the way caffeine is really bad for type 2 diabetics, a growing epidemic in this country. The caffeine causes insulin resistance.
