What do acne, yeast infections and joint pain all have in common? pH. pH balance inside and outside of the body is a VERY important concept to understand. If the body has too much acidity in the blood, the body will leach calcium from our bones to balance the body from being too acidic. This can lead to major calcium loss in the body and thus joint pain and difficulties with movement.
Diseases thrive with acid inside the body. If red blood cells become too acidic they begin to coagulate or get sticky and cause clots or other cardiovascular and immune system problems. This is often caused by and can be prevented by diet. Foods that cause the body to be acidic may be red meat, dairy, sugar (especially in sodas), coffee, processed foods and more. The goal inside the body (except for the vaginal area) is to be alkaline.
Outside the body the skin is meant to be acidic. In fact, our largest organ has an "acid mantle" that helps to keep bacteria out because bacteria has difficulties living in an acidic environment. Someone who does not produce enough acid on the surface of the skin might have a greater tendency to break out. Breakouts are also an inflammatory response which can be caused by stress, poor diet, environmental factors like pollution, cellular damage from the sun and so much more.
As a quick review:
Keep the inside of the body Alkaline by staying away from the foods mentioned above and eating a strong plant-based diet rich in deep colors. Most importantly stay away from sugar. It it the root of so many problems. Drink lots of alkaline water to help flush out acid waste.
The outside of the body is supposed to be acidic. Make sure to use an alcohol-free toner if you use regular bar soap that is alkaline. My customers love to add lemon juice on their skin for up to 2 minutes to raise their skin's pH levels. Just be super careful when doing that as you can cause your own chemical peel.
As always make sure you reach out to your doctor or healthcare practitioner before starting any diet or skincare changes.
