CELLULAR TURNOVER MYTH

Companies have done a great job at telling the public that as we age, cellular turnover slows down.
The key to anti-aging is to speed up the cellular turnover rate right? WRONG. We've been lead to think that using products to increase cellular turnover is a good thing when in fact the cells only divide about 50 times and that's it! It's called the Hayflick Limit.

Exfoliating dead cells is important especially when it comes to preventing adult acne, but using products like Vitamin A not only increases cellular turnover, but causes inflammation (aka aging).

Why does the skin look so much younger when you use Vitamin A- Retinol? For the most part A in high doses becomes an irritant resulting in inflammation. Blood flow comes to the surface of the skin causing it to puff out the wrinkles fooling us into thinking our skin is younger.

Something similar happens when you get a sun burn. The skin swells and becomes tight from the blood trying to repair and PROTECT the skin. Inflammation like that also robs the lower layers of cells (growing cells) of vital nutrients because all of the nutrients that come with the blood are going to the top layer (dead layer) of skin to repair it.

Products that cause cellular turnover also sensitize the skin and makes one more prone to skin cancer. FYI skin cancer rates have never been higher and continue to go up each year.

What you should be doing with that dry sponge you call skin is HYDRATING and feeding your skin with as many nutrients as possible. While all of those cellular turnover products have great short-term effects you really should care about your skin in the long-term. Make sure to be kind and gentle to your skin! It has to take you a long way.
